Elizabeth City, NC #413

Elizabeth City, NC also had two Silsby engines, #413 a third size engine built in 1873 for San Antonio, TX and #2888 a second size engine, built in 1902 by The American Fire Engine Company. Records indicate that the later engine exists today but the engine pictured is certainly the older of the two. The later engine would have been of the crane neck design rather than the straight frame shown here, and would probably have had wood wheels. A churn valve appears to have been added to the pump to allow for line shut down while the engine is running. It is also possible that #413 was rebuilt in 1902 and as sometimes was done, renumbered 2888 using the original chassis and steel wheels.
