The Shire considered the supreme draft horse.

The shire is noted for it's great strength, and is probably the heaviest of the draft breeds. It may weigh in excess of 2600 pounds when full grown. Even though very large it is gentle and easily managed.

The steamer was first pulled by part of this team in Washington DC, and then again in Baltimore Maryland. Later this planned photo session with a four horse took place on the farm which raised this fine team in Pennsylvania near York. These were the first and only Shires to pull the steamer. The photo to the right is Dan Gallik, then First Lieutenant of Protection Engine Co. No. 3 holding one of the team of Shires that pulled the engine in the Washington / Baltimore Parades.
